Art

“I am always doing what I cannot do yet, in order to learn how to do it.” – Vincent Van Gogh

The K-5 art curriculum at Southview is based on the MN Art Standards, the National Core Art Standards of Creating, Presenting, Responding, Connecting, and also the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. Southview artists create both preliminary and final artwork in a variety of 2D and 3D art mediums including: drawing, painting, collage, fibers, sculpture. All artwork created throughout the school year is compiled into art portfolios and distributed to each student at year-end.

Students earn opportunities for "free time" activities. These art-related activities foster individual and/or collaborative creativity, art history, fine motor skill development, and new art interests. The available choices vary by grade level and include a wide variety of art-themed book, drawing, game, and building options. Choice-based art fosters imagination and allows kids to learn and problem solve while playing and creating.
